A Trip to an African Hospital

Upon the completion of a 4-day crusade, my wife noticed a small sore on the side of her neck. Little did we know this would be the beginning of a 3-week scare. That sore turned into three, all on her neck and face. They then made their way to my face, then my thumb. I went to bed one evening with the one on my thumb being the size of a small pimple. When I woke up the next morning it was the size of a boil and my thumb and hand were swollen. I contacted a virtual physician back in the states who recommended that I go pick up some antibiotics. By noon I had red streaks running up my arm from my thumb. The virtual physician stayed in contact with me but by 4 pm he recommended that I seek medical treatment.

The hospital visit was unlike anything you would experience in the states. The place looked as if it were stuck in the 1940s. I was not allowed to proceed back for consultation until I paid that fee. As I lay on the hospital bed they would not draw blood for lab work unless I paid that fee. Once finished they calculated all of the items required for my treatment, you guessed it, pay that bill on the way out the door. I overheard a conversation with the man behind the curtain next to me. He was told to pay the admittance fee or he must leave. The windows were open and mosquitos were in full force. After an antibiotic IV and a heavy dose of Iodine on my thumb, I was released. The visit and meds from the pharmacy ran me about $110 US. The people were very kind and did the best they could considering the circumstances.

Worship in Africa

Without a doubt, church services in Africa are MUCH different than they are in the US. You will not find padded pews, airconditioning, lattes, and many other modern conveniences. There may or may not be a roof, running water, or electricity. There may or may not be instruments or a sound system. However, that does not prevent them from worshipping God. The worship service here is VERY lively. This is a brief audio recording from a recent service that we attended which took place under a tarp. Hope you enjoy it.

The Corporate Life Transition

I have had the privilege to work as an IT professional in the Tulsa area for nearly 25 years at tremendous companies, alongside outstanding people, and with exciting new technologies. In April of 2019, I resigned from a company (ONEOK INC.) that I had applied to work at for many years. All of us have those moments where we look back and wonder what would have happened if we would have perused a different path. I have made the decision to take that different path and pursue a calling that I feel passionate about.

In May a non-profit (Bible Truth Ministries) was established and we have partnered with another non-profit (A2Z Missions) in order to do missions work in Africa. My family and I have liquidated all our assets and are making plans to move to Bulawayo, Zimbabwe in August of this year. The purpose of the mission is to provide leadership and Bible training to Pastors and Bishops in the surrounding countries.

Many of those whom I have worked with in the past have been EXTREMELY supportive in this new endeavor. Some of you have donated or committed to donate once we were up and going. For that, I am very grateful and humbled. We are currently traveling full time in the states in order to raise awareness and funding here before we leave. The transition has gone relatively smooth thus far and many people across the nation are excited about this opportunity. Thank you to those who have offered kind words of encouragement and those who have offered financial support. Without the generous donations and support of great people like you, this would not be possible.

Our website is set up to accept credit card donations as well as information on where to send checks stateside. We will post a blog there as well as have a monthly newsletter that will go out to those who sign up. I can assure you that you do not want to miss the updates along the way. Thank you in advance for considering to come alongside us in support of following this calling.

Thank you,

Jessie Stewart

A2Z Missions is excited to announce that we are adding a permanent, full-time missionary to our team! Brother and Sister Jessie Stewart from Tulsa, Oklahoma (Pastor Gary Howard’s church) will be heading to Zimbabwe in August of this year.
